The Roman Catholic Diocese of Austin ((ラテン語:Dioecesis Austiniensis)) includes 127 parishes, or faith communities, in 25 counties in Central Texas. The diocese stretches from West, Texas, (just north of Waco) in the north to San Marcos in the south to the Bryan - College Station area in the east to Mason in the west. Its largest metropolitan areas are Austin, Bryan - College Station, the Killeen – Temple – Fort Hood area and Waco. The diocese estimates over 558,000 Catholics live in the diocese (2015 estimate).〔http://www.austindiocese.org/sites/default/files/Fact%20Sheet_1.pdf〕 There are 221 priests (176 active, 45 retired), 213 permanent deacons (164 active, 49 retired), approximately 46 brothers and 102 sisters serving in the diocese.〔http://www.austindiocese.org/sites/default/files/Fact%20Sheet_1.pdf〕 ==History== The diocese was founded on November 15, 1947. It is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. It was announced on January 26, 2010 that Joe S. Vazquez, previously auxiliary bishop and Vicar General/Chancellor of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston would be installed as bishop for the Diocese of Austin.〔http://www.austindiocese.org/department_home.php?id=1〕 On January 21, 2015 Pope Francis appointed Rev. Daniel E. Garcia as the first auxiliary bishop in the history of the diocese.〔http://www.austindiocese.org/article/15296/rev-daniel-e-garcia-appointed-auxiliary-bishop〕 At the time of his appointment Fr. Garcia was serving as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia.
